Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival and Trek Preparation

The day before your trek is dedicated to logistics, resting, and ensuring your high-performance gear is dialed in for the climb.

  • Pickup & Transfer: The Em Adventure team will pick you up from any major arrival point in Lombok (Lombok International Airport, Bangsal Harbor, Senggigi, or Kuta) in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

  • Journey to the Mountain: You will be transferred to your included pre-trek accommodation in Sembalun village (situated at the foothills of Rinjani).

  • Check-in & Briefing: After checking into your room, you will meet your lead guide. This is a critical time for a gear check. Because you are doing a fast-track 2-day ascent, the guide will verify your trail running shoes, check your ultra-light daypack, and ensure your headlamp and carbon trekking poles are ready.

  • Rest: Enjoy dinner at the hotel or a local warung, and get to sleep early. You will need to be well-rested for the 7:00 AM start the next morning.

Day 1: The Savannah Ascent

Sembalun (1,150m) ➔ Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639m)

  • Trekking Time: 7–9 hours

  • Elevation Gain: +1,489m

The journey begins in the vast, open grasslands of Sembalun. The early hours are relatively flat and exposed, allowing you to settle into a steady rhythm.

  • 08:00 AM: Begin trekking from the Rinjani National Park Office.

  • POS 1 (Pemantauan – 1,300m) & POS 2 (Tengengean – 1,500m): Reached after roughly 2 to 3 hours of steady walking.

  • POS 3 (Pada Balong – 1,800m): Stop here for a freshly prepared, hot lunch served by your porter team.

  • The Final Climb (2,639m): After lunch, the terrain shifts into a steep, 3.5-hour climb through the Casuarina forest.

  • 17:00 PM: Arrive at the Plawangan Sembalun campsite. Enjoy the sunset over the lake and rest up in your pre-pitched tent for the early morning summit push.

Day 2: The Summit Push and The Healing Waters

Crater Rim (2,639m) ➔ Summit (3,726m) ➔ Segara Anak Lake (2,000m)

  • Trekking Time: 9–11 hours total

  • Elevation Gain/Loss: +1,087m up, -1,726m down

This is the most physically demanding day, featuring the extreme altitude of the peak followed by a steep descent into the caldera.

  • 01:30 AM: Wake up for a light pre-trek breakfast and hot coffee.

  • 02:00 AM: Begin the ascent in the dark. The final hour involves climbing on loose, steep volcanic scree. This section demands stability, making carbon fiber trekking poles an absolute necessity for upward momentum and a high-lumen headlamp crucial for navigating the dark.

  • 06:00 AM (Summit – 3,726m): Arrive at the peak for a spectacular sunrise over the Wallace Line.

  • 06:30 AM: Descend rapidly back to the crater rim, utilizing your poles to glide safely down the volcanic ash.

  • 08:30 AM: Enjoy a heavy breakfast at camp, pack up, and begin the 2.5-hour rocky descent into the caldera.

  • 12:00 PM (Segara Anak Lake – 2,000m): Arrive at the lake edge. After lunch, take a 10-minute walk to the natural volcanic hot springs. Soaking in these mineral-rich waters is the perfect way to recover your muscles after the summit climb. Camp is set up right by the lake for your second night.

Day 3: The Jurassic Gorge Descent

Segara Anak Lake (2,000m) ➔ Torean Village (~600m)

  • Trekking Time: 8–10 hours

  • Elevation Loss: -1,400m

The Torean route is famous for its dramatic, otherworldly beauty. Instead of climbing back over a crater rim (like the Senaru route), you follow the river valley out of the volcano.

  • 07:30 AM: After breakfast by the lake, begin the journey along the river gorge.

  • The Trail: The path is highly technical, featuring steep, sometimes wet rocky sections alongside deep ravines, ladders, and natural bridges. Navigating this uneven terrain is much easier with agile, high-performance trail running shoes featuring aggressive lugs, such as the Kailas FUGA DU 2 or Norda 001A, rather than heavy traditional boots. Wearing a lightweight running vest or a minimalist 15–20L daypack will keep you nimble throughout the long descent.

  • Penimbungan Waterfall: Pass magnificent waterfalls cascading down the sheer green cliffs of the gorge. Lunch is served along the trail.

  • 15:00 – 17:00 PM: Arrive at the forest edge in Torean Village. The Em Adventure transport team will be waiting to drive you to your next destination in Lombok.

Items to Pack:

Trekking Mount Rinjani is an incredible adventure, but the terrain is rugged, and the temperature fluctuates wildly from hot and humid at the bottom to below freezing at the summit. Because porters usually carry your tent, sleeping bag, and food, you only need to pack a daypack with your personal essentials.

Here is a short, essential packing list to keep you comfortable and safe:

  • Headlamp

  • Toiletries and personal medications

  • Sunblock or lotion, hat or cap, and sunglasses

  • Muscle spray or balm

  • Towel

  • Trekking pants and shorts

  • Trekking poles (optional)

  • Sandals (optional)

  • Swimwear
